Facts

There are four types of cancer that affect the blood cells, bone marrow, the lymph nodes, and other parts of the lymphatic system:  leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and myelodysplasia syndrome (MDS).  Leukemia is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow.  There are four types of leukemia:  acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and chronic myeloid leukemia.

 

Someone in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer every 3 minutes and every 9 minutes someone loses their battle against a blood cancer.  An estimate 58, 320 people are expected to die in 2016 from leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.  About 60,000 people are expected to be diagnosed with leukemia in 2016.  Between the years of 2008-2012, the fifth most common cause of cancer in men was leukemia and it was the sixth most common for women.
